Researchers also reported better daily functioning at 78 weeks and less brain-volume loss on MRI in the crossword group.
The researchers themselves emphasized that the results need to be replicated in a larger trial, and the study involved people who already had mild cognitive impairment. So it would be inaccurate to conclude that doing crosswords automatically improves everyone’s memory. But the findings provide evidence that some forms of puzzle-based cognitive activity can have measurable effects under specific conditions.

Puzzles Require Problem-Solving
Nearly every puzzle forces you to answer the same basic question: what should I try next?
That process involves generating possibilities, testing them, noticing errors, changing strategies, and gradually narrowing the number of possible solutions. If a strategy fails, you have to update your approach.
